Frequently Asked Questions

Car Pawn Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Have questions about pawning your car for cash in South Africa? We have compiled detailed answers to the most common legal, financial, and procedural questions asked by vehicle owners across Gauteng.

Can I pawn my car and still drive it?

No. Under the National Credit Act (NCA), a legal pawn transaction requires the credit provider to hold physical possession of the collateral asset. Beware of 'pawn and drive' schemes which are often structured as predatory sale-and-leaseback arrangements that strip you of legal ownership and charge extortionate monthly rental fees.

At We Pawn Cars, your vehicle remains safely stored in a 24/7 guarded, insured indoor facility under a strict zero-drive policy until you settle your loan.

Can I pawn a car that is still financed by a bank?

No. The vehicle must be 100% paid off and unencumbered. The original NATIS RC1 certificate must show your name as both Registered Owner and Title Holder. If a financial institution (like WesBank, MFC, ABSA, or Standard Bank) is listed as Title Holder, the car cannot be pawned until the bank debt is fully cleared and papers amended.

Do you perform credit bureau checks or contact my employer?

No. We do not perform credit checks through TransUnion, Experian, or XDS. We do not contact employers or require proof of formal employment. The loan is secured 100% against the market equity of your paid-off vehicle, making it suitable for self-employed individuals, business owners, and those with impaired credit records.

How quickly are loan funds paid out?

Following a rapid 20-minute physical appraisal and document verification at our facility, the agreement is signed and funds are transferred immediately to your bank account via electronic funds transfer (EFT). Payouts clear within 24 hours.

What documents do I need to bring?

You must bring: (1) The original blue-and-white NATIS RC1 vehicle registration document; (2) Your original Green Barcoded SA ID or Smart ID Card; (3) Proof of residential address not older than 3 months; and (4) 3 months bank statements.

What happens if I cannot repay my loan on time?

We work flexibly with clients to structure loan extensions where monthly interest and storage fees are serviced. If a borrower defaults permanently, the vehicle is liquidated transparently in accordance with the National Credit Act to settle the outstanding debt. Crucially, pawn defaults do not result in debt collector harassment or negative credit bureau blacklisting.

Is my car insured while stored with We Pawn Cars?

Yes. All vehicles are covered under our comprehensive commercial garage-keeper insurance against fire, storm, theft, and accidental damage for the entire duration of the loan agreement.
